About me

For twenty years I stood on the other side.

Food scientist. Product developer. Food industry. I know how products are made, because I made them.

Six years ago I walked away. This is that story — without the heroics.

Back then, still in the food industry.

Before

Recipes I would not have served at my own table

I studied food science because I wanted to know what food actually does inside the body. I ended up in product development. For two decades that was my job: building recipes, cutting costs, extending shelf life, checking labels.

I knew what an ingredient cost. I knew what it promised. And I knew what it delivered. Usually those were not the same thing.

Here is the uncomfortable part: I was good at it. This was not a job I did reluctantly. I liked it — until I started reading the labels in my own kitchen cupboard.

“I knew what an ingredient cost, what it promised and what it delivered. Usually those were not the same thing.”

The break

Six years ago I walked away

There was no single day when everything tipped over. It was more a slow accumulation of moments until the account was overdrawn. At some point I stopped — no plan B, no next contract, no idea what would follow.

What followed turned my life inside out. Three things at once, and all three are connected.

Nutrition

I started eating the way I would always have advised my own family to eat. Less from the shelf, more from the kitchen. And supplements where food alone does not get there.

Essential oils

First an experiment, because Annika was convinced. Then a habit. Today an anchor I would not want to give up — every day, several times.

Network marketing

The form in which I pass all of this on. Self-determined, at my own pace, with nobody telling me what I am allowed to say.

At home in the north

I live with Annika in Schleswig-Holstein, in the far north of Germany. A lot of sky, not much drama. That suits a job where something is always happening.

Today

What my days are made of

No office, no meetings about recipes. Instead:

I write books about essential oils in everyday life — two are published, the third is in progress.

I support people who want to change how they eat and have no idea where to start.

I stand on stages and in living rooms explaining why quality in oils is not a marketing word.

Together with Annika I build a team where everyone moves at their own pace.

What guides me

Three sentences you may hold me to

Sources, not gut feeling

If I claim something, I can tell you where I know it from. Studies are not always clear — and then I say that too. What I will not do is tell a nice story that cannot be backed up.

Nothing I do not use myself

I do not recommend a product that is not on the shelf in my own home. That is limiting, and that is exactly the point.

No pressure

No countdown, no last remaining seat, no artificial scarcity. If something only works under time pressure, it does not work.

As a pair

And then there is Annika

This website would not exist without her. Annika was the first of us to start with essential oils, and she convinced me with a mixture of patience and stubbornness while I was still looking for studies.

Together we are Couple of Oils. That is where we host our oil evenings on the Elbe and support our community. Here on oil-expert I write as an individual — there we are two.
